If someone isn't exposed to magic, it isn't as though their time becomes completely empty. There's science to explore. Art. Literature. Comparing the magical community I knew with the Muggle community that my parents raised me in, the latter was certainly more advanced in technology that didn't rely on some innate ability."

One of the best ways to stay informed was always to read. To read the texts written by various communities, and digest what's happened over the course of history.
