Her lips initially parted in protest, but soon Hermione calmed— it wasn't meant to be a slight to her personally, she was sure, as there was always exceptions to any rule, and in this type of effort, she felt strongly that she was one. But even she had to admit that there were often times, over the years, when she was frustrated with any number of peers for not putting their all towards innovation and progress.
"I think," Hermione considered, lips pursed, "that there is a threshold beyond which it becomes hard for the average person to push their intelligence or imagination. Every generation hits a ceiling, and it sets that same ceiling for the next, but the next generation still has to start from the same place. They still have to build an understanding of everything that the previous generations have understood. If innovation slows down, I think that serves as a factor, but the fact that we do still end up raising the bar every year speaks a great deal for us as a race."
